DescriptionThis walking stick has a Malacca (palm wood) shaft, Georgian bronze ferrule and is surmounted by a carved walrus tooth ivory bust of Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson. The grip features Nelson (head and shoulders) in his Rear-Admiral uniform, wearing Order of the Bath sash and star. Nelson was awarded the eight-pointed silver star by King George III while he was recuperating in London following the loss of his arm. It was for his contribution to the British victory over a Spanish fleet at the Battle of Cape St Vincent in February 1797.SignificanceThe Nelson legend is an important stream of naval tradition, and material featuring Nelson helps tell the story of the impact Nelson had during and after his lifetime.Augustus Charles Pugin
