DescriptionThis ship builder’s model represents the TMSV ADELAIDE STAR at a scale of 1:100.HistoryThis model features a plaque listing the ship's dimensions and manufacturer details. Models such as this were used by ship builders to show clients and to aid in the construction of the full scale vessel. ADELAIDE STAR was a 12,964 ton twin screw cargo ship. Its refrigerated cargo space was equipped to carry motor cars between its decks. The vessel was launched on 2 August 1950 by John Brown & Co at Clydebank for the Blue Star Line. In 1950 it was the largest refrigerated cargo ship. On a trip from Timaru, New Zealand to Liverpool, England on 8 March 1975 the ADELAIDE STAR suffered severe damage to the engines and was deemed uneconomical to repair.SignificanceThis model is representative of large international cargo shipping in Australia during the mid-20th century.
