DescriptionThis builder's half model of HMAS MOMBAH was probably made on Garden Island, Sydney in 1920. The half model features the deck fittings, the hull painted with a grey and maroon finish and the waterline painted in white.HistoryThe HMAS MOMBAH was built by Cockatoo Island Dockyard in 1921. It was launched on 23 April 1921 and first served on Sydney Harbour as a coal storage lighter. In 1930, it was purchased and operated by the Melbourne Harbour Trust until World War II broke out. On 25 March 1944, MOMBAH was requisitioned by the Royal Australian Navy for service at Darwin and later Morotai. Throughout the next two years the vessel was fitted with defence weapons. MOMBAH was sold in 1948 before being scuttled at sea in 1968.SignificanceThis model represents shipbuilder's techniques that were alive in the early 20th century in Cockatoo Island Dockyard. It also displays the skill and craft demanded of ships for the Royal Australian Navy.
