DescriptionThis photograph depicts the four-masted barque ELGINSHIRE anchored in Double Bay possibly during its 1919 visit to Sydney. The vessel loaded a cargo of 4,000 tons of wheat bound for Europe. Before it arrived in Sydney, the vessel and its crew lead by Captain Dixon encountered a cyclone between Korea and Portland, Oregon.HistoryThe four-masted steel barque ELGINSHIRE was built in 1889 by Birrell, Stenhouse and Company for Thomas Law and Company, Glasgow. It was sold to shipbreakers in 1922 and broken up the following year.SignificanceThe Samuel J Hood photographic collection records an extensive range of maritime activity on Sydney Harbour, including sail and steam ships, crew portraits, crews at work, ship interiors, stevedores loading and unloading cargo, port scenes, pleasure boats and harbourside social activities from the 1890s through to the 1950s. They are also highly competent artistic studies and views - Hood was regarded as an important figure in early Australian photojournalism. Hood’s maritime photographs are one of the most significant collections of such work in Australia.
