DescriptionThis photograph depicts crew members on board the four-masted steel barque ELGINSHIRE.It is possible this photograph was taken between 1916 and 1922, as S J Dixon appears second from the right, back row, who joined as an apprentice in 1916, aged 16.HistoryThe four-masted steel barque ELGINSHIRE was built in 1889 by Birrell, Stenhouse and Company for Thomas Law and Company, Glasgow. It was sold to shipbreakers in 1922 and broken up the following year.SignificanceThe Samuel J Hood photographic collection records an extensive range of maritime activity on Sydney Harbour, including sail and steam ships, crew portraits, crews at work, ship interiors, stevedores loading and unloading cargo, port scenes, pleasure boats and harbourside social activities from the 1890s through to the 1950s. They are also highly competent artistic studies and views - Hood was regarded as an important figure in early Australian photojournalism. Hood’s maritime photographs are one of the most significant collections of such work in Australia.
