DescriptionThis photograph of SS TREWINNARD arriving in Sydney Harbour on Monday 1 October 1923 was taken from Bradley's Head and shows the ship about to anchor off Darling Point. TREWINNARD was operating for the Hain Line at the time, transporting cargo between Britain and Australia.HistorySS TREWINNARD was a 7230 ton steam ship built in 1914 as AMMON for the German Kosmos Line. It was constructed by Flensburger shipbuilders at Flensburg. In 1920 after World War I the vessel was taken over by Great Britain and in 1921 renamed TREWINNARD when it was sold to the Hain Steam Ship Company. In 1924 it was purchased by the Federal Steam Navigation Company and renamed PAKIPAKI. PAKIPAKI was scrapped on 15 December 1933.SignificanceThis photograph is part of the F G Wilkinson Photograph Collection, comprising more than 700 glass plate negatives of ships in Sydney Harbour created between 1919 and 1936. The collection provides extensive and well-documented coverage of the changing styles of shipping in the port of Sydney before the gradual decline of the coastal trade, during the peak period of commercial shipping in Australia. The backgrounds of the photographs also reveal the changing face of the city and harbour foreshores.
