DescriptionSS CREWE HALL was photographed at wharf No 1 Woolloomooloo on Monday 1 September 1924. It was operating for the J R Ellerman & Co line and active transporting commercial cargo between Australia and England.HistorySS CREWE HALL was a British 4218 ton cargo vessel built in 1898. It initially operated for the Sun Shipping Company/Hall Line until 1901 when it was sold to J R Ellerman & Co who used the vessel up until 1929 when it was scrapped. CREWE HALL was used for transporting cargos including flour, wheat, sheep, and general goods between Australia and England.SignificanceThis photograph represents SS CREWE HALL and its commercial activities in Australia during the first half of the 20th century.

It is part of the F G Wilkinson Photograph Collection, comprising more than 700 glass plate negatives of ships in Sydney Harbour between 1919 and 1936. The collection provides an extensive and well-documented coverage of the changing styles of shipping in the port of Sydney before the gradual decline of the coastal trade, and in a period which was probably the peak reached by commercial shipping in Australia. The backgrounds also reveal the changing face of the city and harbour foreshores.
