DescriptionCITY OF MANDALAY is shown at No 1 anchorage Athol Bight on Friday, New Years Day 1932. This photograph was captured at 11.40am, on a boat travelling between Circular Quay to Taronga, Sydney.HistoryCITY OF MANDALAY was a British steam merchant vessel of 7028 ton built in 1925 by Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson at Wallsend, Sunderland. It was owned by the Ellerman Line Ltd of London. On 17 October 1939 it was attacked and sunk by a German submarine near Cape Finnestere, Spain.SignificanceThis photograph is part of the F G Wilkinson Photograph Collection, comprising more than 700 glass plate negatives of ships in Sydney Harbour between 1919 and 1936. The collection provides an extensive and well-documented coverage of the changing styles of shipping in the port of Sydney before the gradual decline of the coastal trade, and in a period which was probably the peak reached by commercial shipping in Australia. The backgrounds also reveal the changing face of the city and harbour foreshores.
