DescriptionCLAN MACKINLAY was photographed at No 1 Athol Bight on Saturday afternoon 5 November 1932. This image was captured at 3.15pm from a boat travelling between Circular Quay and Taronga Park, Sydney. CLAN MACKINLAY was operating for the Clan Line and used for carrying cargo.HistoryCLAN MACKINLAY was a steel-screw merchant vessel of 6,365 tons built in 1918 by William Hamilton & Co Ld at Port Glasgow. In 1932 it was owned by the Clan Line Steamers Ld and registered in Glasgow under a British flag. In 1940 the vessel was attacked and sunk near Ness Head, Wick.SignificanceThis photograph is part of the F G Wilkinson Photograph Collection, comprising more than 700 glass plate negatives of ships in Sydney Harbour between 1919 and 1936. The collection provides an extensive and well-documented coverage of the changing styles of shipping in the port of Sydney before the gradual decline of the coastal trade, and in a period which was probably the peak reached by commercial shipping in Australia. The backgrounds also reveal the changing face of the city and harbour foreshores.
