DescriptionSTANLEY HALL is shown crossing Circular Quay while RMS OSTERLEY is at company's wharf. These ships were involved in transporting passengers and cargo to Australia during the first half of the 20th century.HistoryRoyal Mail steamer OSTERLEY was a 12129 ton steamship built in 1909 and used on the passenger trade route between London, the Suez Canal and Australia. Built by London & Glasgow at Govan it operated for the Orient Steam Navigation Company Ltd under a British flag. Its career ended in 1930. SS STANLEY HALL was built in 1894 as a British cargo ship of 4104 ton. Constructed by Palmers at Jarrow and owned by the Sun Shipping Co Ltd of Liverpool. Its career ended in 1928 and was scrapped at 'Bo'ness' in 1930.SignificanceThis photograph is part of the F G Wilkinson Photograph Collection, comprising more than 700 glass plate negatives of ships in Sydney Harbour between 1919 and 1936. The collection provides an extensive and well-documented coverage of the changing styles of shipping in the port of Sydney before the gradual decline of the coastal trade, and in a period which was probably the peak reached by commercial shipping in Australia. The backgrounds also reveal the changing face of the city and harbour foreshores.
