DescriptionBRISBANE MARU is shown anchored off Cremorne Point, Sydney on Saturday afternoon, 28 January 1933. This image was captured by Frederick Wilkinson from a boat travelling to Mosman from Circular Quay.HistoryBRISBANE MARU was a 5425 ton cargo ship built in 1930 by Yokohama Dock at Yokohama. It was owned by the Japanese line Osaka Shosen Kaisha K. In 1942 during World War II BRISBANE MARU was bombed by United States planes in Guadalcanal and sank. At the time it was being used as a troop transport for Japan.SignificanceThis photograph is part of the F G Wilkinson Photograph Collection, comprising more than 700 glass plate negatives of ships in Sydney Harbour between 1919 and 1936. The collection provides an extensive and well-documented coverage of the changing styles of shipping in the port of Sydney before the gradual decline of the coastal trade, and in a period which was probably the peak reached by commercial shipping in Australia. The backgrounds also reveal the changing face of the city and harbour foreshores.
