DescriptionNorwegian motor tanker NINA BORTHEN was photographed anchored off Cremorne Point on Saturday afternoon 14 October 1933. This image was captured from the 1pm boat travelling from Circular Quay to Mosman, Sydney.HistoryNINA BORTHEN was a Norwegian motor tanker of 6,123 tons built in 1930 by Armstrong Whitworth at Willington Quay. It was owned by Skiggs A /S Motor tank at Oslo, Norway. In 1940 it sunk off the coast of Ireland after being damaged by a torpedo. A life boat was found at Dunmore, County Donegal in Ireland on December 1940 and a joint arbritration committee considered it a war loss.SignificanceThis photograph is part of the F G Wilkinson Photograph Collection, comprising more than 700 glass plate negatives of ships in Sydney Harbour between 1919 and 1936. The collection provides an extensive and well-documented coverage of the changing styles of shipping in the port of Sydney before the gradual decline of the coastal trade, and in a period which was probably the peak reached by commercial shipping in Australia. The backgrounds also reveal the changing face of the city and harbour foreshores.
