DescriptionSS ENOGGERA was photographed on Saturday 4 August 1923. This view was captured off SS ST GILES. ENOGGERA was used for conducting trade between the Australian states between 1921 and 1934.
HistoryThe SS ENOGGERA was launched at the Government Dockyard in Newcastle on Friday 25 June 1920 with Edward Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) in attendance. The 3359 ton vessel was used for carrying general cargo and operated in Australian waters conducting interstate trade from 1921 until 1934 when it was sold to Japanese owners.

SignificanceThis photograph is part of the F G Wilkinson Photograph Collection, comprising more than 700 glass plate negatives of ships in Sydney Harbour between 1919 and 1936. The collection provides an extensive and well-documented coverage of the changing styles of shipping in the port of Sydney before the gradual decline of the coastal trade, and in a period which was probably the peak reached by commercial shipping in Australia. The backgrounds also reveal the changing face of the city and harbour foreshores.
