DescriptionThe cargo ship CANADIAN VICTOR was photographed anchored off Cremorne Point on Sunday 12 February 1933. This image was captured from the 10.55am ferry travelling between Taronga and Circular Quay, Sydney. In 1933 CANADIAN VICTOR was conducting trade for Canadian Merchant Marine Ltd.HistoryCANADIAN VICTOR was a 5,454 ton cargo ship built in 1920 by Canadian Vickers at Montreal and managed by the Canadian National Steamship Company. In 1928 it was handed over to the Canadian Merchant Marine Ltd and then sold to the Montreal, Australia and New Zealand Line in 1936. In 1937 it was renamed FOO SHONG and in 1938 FUKUSEI MARU. It was wrecked in 1942.SignificanceThis photograph is part of the F G Wilkinson Photograph Collection, comprising more than 700 glass plate negatives of ships in Sydney Harbour between 1919 and 1936. The collection provides an extensive and well-documented coverage of the changing styles of shipping in the port of Sydney before the gradual decline of the coastal trade, and in a period which was probably the peak reached by commercial shipping in Australia. The backgrounds also reveal the changing face of the city and harbour foreshores.
