DescriptionThe Danish cargo ship ANNAM was photographed at No 4 Athol Bight on Saturday 10 December 1932. This image was captured from a ferry travelling between Circular Quay and Taronga, Sydney at 1.45pm.HistoryANNAM was a steel-twin screw cargo vessel of 6,135 tons built in 1913 by Akt Burmeister & Wall at Copenhagen. In 1932 it was owned by the East Asiatic Company and registered in Copenhagen under a Danish flag. In 1955 it was sold to Polish Ocean Lines and renamed ROMAULD TRAUGUTT. In 1962 it was remodelled into a hulk and used until it was scrapped in 1972.SignificanceThis photograph is part of the F G Wilkinson Photograph Collection, comprising more than 700 glass plate negatives of ships in Sydney Harbour between 1919 and 1936. The collection provides an extensive and well-documented coverage of the changing styles of shipping in the port of Sydney before the gradual decline of the coastal trade, and in a period which was probably the peak reached by commercial shipping in Australia. The backgrounds also reveal the changing face of the city and harbour foreshores.
