DescriptionThe cargo ship CANADIAN CRUISER was photographed anchored off Cremorne on Thursday 12 January 1933. This image was captured from the 6.16 ferry travelling to Mosman from Circular Quay, Sydney.HistoryCANADIAN CRUISER was a 7,178 ton cargo vessel built by Halifax Shipyards Ld at Halifax in 1921. In 1933 it was owned by Canadian Cruiser Ld and registered in the port of Halifax under a British flag. It was scuttled in 1941. CANADIAN CRUISER was used for carrying cargo including wool between Canada and Australia.SignificanceThis photograph is part of the F G Wilkinson Photograph Collection, comprising more than 700 glass plate negatives of ships in Sydney Harbour between 1919 and 1936. The collection provides an extensive and well-documented coverage of the changing styles of shipping in the port of Sydney before the gradual decline of the coastal trade, and in a period which was probably the peak reached by commercial shipping in Australia. The backgrounds also reveal the changing face of the city and harbour foreshores.
