DescriptionThis Sir Douglas Mawson philatelic cover was sent from Antarctica to New Zealand. It features a purple ink stamp which reads 'Sir Douglas Mawson, 14 Oct. 1958, In remembrance 40 years' and two Australian Antarctic Territory postage stamps commemorating his 1982 centennary. A red ink stamp depicting the AURORA AUSTRALIS, helicopter operation service and supply, appears upper left.SignificanceThis collection is significant in representing a broad range of Antarctic philately interests (the study of stamps and postal history). It covers most of the countries who have bases in the white continent and are signatories to the Antarctic Treaty, including all of the Australian bases.
