This booklet was given to guests at the ceremony for the Royal Australian Navy Anzac class guided missile frigate HMAS PERTH (III) on 26 August 2006 at D Berth, Fremantle Port, Western Australia. It provides details of the ship's technical information, a ceremony Order of Service and a history of the naval vessel.HistoryHMAS PERTH (III) is the eighth Anzac class guided missile frigate built by Tenix Defence Systems for the Royal Australian Navy and was launched at Williamstown Dockyard, Victoria in March 2004 by Ms Margaret Gee (daughter of PERTH (I) survivor Allan Gee) and commissioned in August 2006 under Commander Simon Gregg with Ms Gee as Commissioning Lady.
Anzac class frigates are long-range escorts with roles including air defence, anti- submarine warfare, surveillance, reconnaissance and interdiction. The ships are capable of countering simultaneous threats from the air, surface and sub-surface. Powered by a combined diesel or gas (CODOG) propulsion plant permits speeds in excess of 27 knots with an operational range of more than 6,000 nautical miles.
A commissioning ceremony marks the introduction into service of a ship or submarine as a unit of the Royal Australian Navy. At the moment of breaking the commissioning pennant, the vessel becomes the responsibility of the Commanding Officer, who, together with the Officers and ship's Company, has the duty of making and keeping the vessel ready for any service required by Australia in peace or war.
