DescriptionThis navy blue elasticised wool swimsuit made by Supernit in the 1940s has a ruched central front panel and a quarter skirt. The design includes narrow cross-back shoulder straps that are buttoned to the inside front of the bodice and a plunging U-shape back. The silver leaf-shaped Supernit logo has been sewn onto the lower front left corner of the swimsuit. HistoryFrom the late 1940s women's swimsuits and sunsuits were often shaped and textured with shirring, smocking and contrasting panels. This created a curvaceous and feminine silhouette that emphasised the bust, waistline and hips. Designers used elasticised wool, belts and ruching to create knitted swimwear that allowed for stretch and movement while still fitting the body closely and achieving a sleek, fashionable look. SignificanceThis swimsuit's design reflects 1940s trends in Australian women's swimwear, and the widespread use of new textile technologies, such as elasticised shirring.
