DescriptionOne of a pair of handmade boat gripes - a simple form of clamp used in boat building. It has an inner core of woven rope sewn into a canvas cover which is painted white, with a painted dark green strip across each end of the canvas cover. One end of the gripe features a triangular metal loop and the other a thick woven rope loop with a metal eyelet in its centre. A tag is attached with the handwritten text Gripes No 1 Cutter.History SignificanceThe gripe is typical of wooden boat construction equipment and demonstrates sailing technology and crafts. It is an excellent example of rope and canvas work.
