DescriptionLieutenant Commander Menlove was invited to present the inaugural HMAS DELORAINE Trophy to the Dux of the Advanced Underwater Control Course at HMAS WATSON on 12 August 1988. Menlove was the commander of the minesweeper HMAS DELORAINE when it sank Japanese submarine I-124 in 1942, the first Royal Australian Navy ship to sink a Japanese submarine.SignificanceThis material forms part of a large collection of photgraphs and other records of Desmond Menlove's career in the Royal Australian Navy Reserve as well as his career in merchant shipping. Desmond Menlove was famous for his role in sinking the first Japanese submarine in World War II, as Lieutenant Commander of HMAS DELORAINE. He also commanded HMAS KAPUNDA and HMAS LATROBE during World War II.
