DescriptionDesmond Menlove was appointed Lieutenant in the Royal Australian Navy Reserves (Sea Going) in 1932. He was called up into the RAN at the start of WWII and was promoted to Lieutenant Commander in August 1940. This certificate signed by the Captain of HMAS ADELAIDE covers the period from his call up on 1 September 1939, the declaration of WWII, through to 21 August 1941.SignificanceThis material forms part of a large collection of photgraphs and other records of Desmond Menlove's career in the Royal Australian Navy Reserve as well as his career in merchant shipping. Desmond Menlove was famous for his role in sinking the first Japanese submarine in World War II, as Lieutenant Commander of HMAS DELORAINE. He also commanded HMAS KAPUNDA and HMAS LATROBE during World War II.
