DescriptionColoured slide showing a sign the Scott Base in Antarctica. The base is a New Zealand Antarctic research facility located at Pram Point on Ross Island near Mount Erebus in New Zealand's Ross Dependency territorial claim. The research facility was named in honour of Captain Robert Falcon Scott, RN, leader of two British expeditions to the Ross Sea area of Antarctica.
This slide is part of a selection of 18 colour transparencies taken by New Zealand scientist Leslie Bowden Quartermain on his expedition to McMurdo Station in 1959.HistoryLeslie Bowden Quartemain, Antarctic Division, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, published 'Two Huts in the Antarctic' in 1963 about the history and preservation of huts at Cape Royds (built by Shackleton) and Cape Evans (built by Scott) on Ross Island in the Ross Sea area.
SignificanceAustralia has jurisdiction over about one third of the icy Antarctic continent; telling its stories and contextualising considerations about its future are important responsibilities for the Australian National Maritime Museum.
