In 1959 Leslie Bowman Quartermain joined the newly established Antarctic Division of the New Zealand Department of Scientific and Industrial Research as Information Officer. In 1976 he received the MBE for his contribution on Antarctic affairs. He died in Wellington, New Zealand on 28 April 1973.
HistoryLeslie Bowden Quartemain, Antarctic Division, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, published 'Two Huts in the Antarctic' in 1963 about the history and preservation of huts at Cape Royds (built by Shackleton) and Cape Evans (built by Scott) on Ross Island in the Ross Sea area.
SignificanceAustralia has jurisdiction over about one third of the icy Antarctic continent; telling its stories and contextualising considerations about its future are important responsibilities for the Australian National Maritime Museum.
