DescriptionScale clockwork model of a pre WWI naval picquet (picket) boatHistoryA picquet-boat (or picket -) is the main link between ship and shore in almost any weather, but its essential function is an ability to tow a chain of cutters and pinnaces carrying shore- or landing parties. [1944 RN definition of a 'picquet' (picket) boat ] Picquet boats also carry-out a sentinel function, for instance a ship, or flotilla, at anchor will launch several of its boats to patrol the anchorage's peripheral waters, especially at night, to guard against and warn of impending dangers or threats. Picquet boats have also been used for offensive tasks in-shore, for instance attacks on vessels or fortifications lying in or along rivers and estuaries; a well-known attack carried out by a picquet boat occurred in 1864 during the American Civil War, when USN Lt. William Cushing successfully attacked and sunk the ironclad CSN ALBEMARLE with torpedoes fired from USN Picket Boat Number One.
