The Sydney Harbour Bridge under construction is in the background.HistoryThe 26th of January, now known as Australia Day, marks the anniversary of the foundation of European settlement in Australia when Captain Arthur Phillip arrived at Sydney Cove in 1788. Initially the 26th of January was referred to as First Landing Day or Foundation Day before becoming known as Anniversary Day. In 1837 the first of a long series of annual regattas was held in Sydney for Anniversary Day. The regatta became the centre of Anniversary Day activities and celebrations and the event attracted thousands of people to Sydney's foreshores. Vessels of all descriptions converged on Sydney Harbour and the appointed flagship, usually moored off Cremorne Point, would act as the start and finish line for competitive races. SignificanceThe Hall photographic collection provides an important pictorial record of recreational boating in Sydney Harbour from the 1890s to the 1930s. The collection documents the lively sailing scene in Sydney during this period and features images of vessels ranging from large racing and cruising yachts to the great array of skiffs and the emerging technologies of motorboats. Images of many of Sydney Harbour's historic sailing clubs and events are also included in this visual record.
