HistoryKING, PHILIP GIDLEY (1758-1808), third governor of New South Wales, born 23 April 1758, Cornwall, entered the navy as a midshipman in 1770, and was promoted lieutenant in 1778. In 1783 he was a lieutenant under Phillip on H.M.S. Europe, and in 1787 was second lieutenant on the Sirius and arrived at Port Jackson in January 1788. King established the settlement at Norfolk Island in 1787 and was lieutenant-governor from 1789. He was Governor of the colony of New South Wales 1800 - 1806.E Walton and Company
