DescriptionThis portrait of Philip Gidley King was engraved by W Skelton from a drawing by J Wright, and featured as Plate 8 in 'The voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany Bay with an account of the establishment of the colonies of Port Jackson and Norfolk Islands' published by John Stockdale in 1789.HistoryPhilip Gidley King (1758-1808) was the third governor of New South Wales. Born on 23 April 1758, in Cornwall, England he entered the Royal Navy as a midshipman in 1770, and was promoted to Lieutenant in 1778. In 1783 he was a Lieutenant under Arthur Phillip on HMS EUROPE, and in 1787 was second lieutenant on the SIRIUS arriving at Port Jackson in January 1788. King established the settlement at Norfolk Island in 1787 and was Lieutenant-Governor from 1789. He was Governor of the colony of New South Wales 1800-1806.
