DescriptionA print titled 'Port du Roi Georges, (Nouvelle Hollande). Un naturel montre a ses Compagnons les Cadeaux qu’il a recus a bord de l’Astrolabe.Port du Roi Georges, (New Holland)' depictig the meeting of crew of the French ship ASTROLABE meeting with a group of Mineng men (also spelled Minang or Menang or Mirnong). Plate 23 from 'Voyage de la corvette l'ASTROLABE. Atlas Historique' by Dumont d'Urville, 1833. HistoryKing Georges Sound is the traditional country of the Minang/Menang Noongar people. They have occupied the South West Region of Western Australia for more than 50,000 years. Dumont d’Urville arrived on 7october 1826 aboard the ASTROLABE and remained there for 18 days. The French explored the area and collected flora and natural specimens that would be taken back to France. The expedition also had the opportunity to engage with the local Noongar people particularly Mokare, also known as Mawcarrie, Markew or Makkare, whose willingness to act as a guide had assisted Phillip Parker King in 1821. SignificanceThis lithograph is significant in that it provides a visual record of one of the great French exploratory ventures of the 19th century (and, incidentally, one of the last). It is important as a source in both the history of European world exploration and, more specifically, of the European relationship with Australia and its inhabitants.
