Engraved by Robert Benard, after Johh Webber, for the French edition of Captain James Cook's account of his third voyage published in Paris, 1785.HistoryCaptain James Cook was on his third voyage when in January 1779 he arrived at the Hawaiian islands (known to Cook as the Sandwich Islands after one of his patrons, the Earl of Sandwich) to wait out the northern winter.
One account of Cook's meeting with the king, reads "The king Tereaboo, upon his return, set out from the village in a large canoe, followed by two others, and paddled toward the ships in great state. Tereaboo gave Cook a fan, in return for which Cook gave Terraboo a clean shirt. Heaps of sugarcane and bread-fruit were then given to the ships crew, and the ceremonies were concluded by an exchange of names between the captain and the king, - the strongest pledge of friendship among the inhabitants of the Pacific Islands'.

SignificanceThe RESOLUTION and the DISCOVERY visited for the second time the Hawaiian Islands, Hawaii, Kauai, Niihau between 17 January-14 March 1779.
