DescriptionThis engraving titled 'Visitors on board HMS INCONSTANT, Hobson's Bay', shows five individually titled vignettes, 'Down in the flats', 'One of the dangers of the deep', 'Tea for 500', 'Some merry merry maidens and their ma', and 'A peep into obscurity'.HistoryHMS INCONSTANT was built by Pembroke Dockyard for the Royal Navy as an iron screw frigate. Launched in 1868 it had a long and varied career until being finally scrapped in 1956. Between 17 October 1880 and 10 october 1822 INCONSTANT joined HM Ships CLEOPATRA, CARYSFORT, BACCHANTE and TOURMALINE as part of the Detached Squadron's world cruise. In Australia the Squadron visited Melbourne on 22 May 1881, Adelaide 9 July, Sydney 14 July-9 August and Brisbane 16-20 August.
