DescriptionThis ship model shows the bulk carrier TNT CAPRICORNIA built in 1983 and still active (2009) carrying bauxite in Australian waters .HistoryThe substantial growth in trade via shipping after the 1960s instigated the development of large bulk carriers to replace smaller dry cargo vessels. These carriers have become the transportation backbone of the ore, grain and coal industries in Australia and the wider world. TNT CARRICORNIA was built and designed to transport bauxite from Weipa to Gladstone, Australia. It is a coal-fired bulker built in Italy in 1983 and is owned by TNT Bulkships Ltd of Sydney and managed by Associated Steamships Pty Ltd, of Melbourne. It is capable of carrying 75,105 tonnes and consists of four cargo holds and a ballast capacity in its combined side and double-bottom tanks. It ran aground on 25 August 1998 at Weipa. It is currently (2009) operating under the name of FITZROY RIVER for ASP Ship Management and conducts coastal trade in Australia.SignificanceThis ship model is representative of TNT CAPRICORNIA and the role of bulk carriers in Australian maritime trade during the 20th century.
