The image depicts a three-masted British, ship rigged, vessel in rough weather under reduced sail; the ship appears to be manoeuvring to enter Port Jackson Heads about 1831. The Macquarie Lighthouse is clearly visible in the distance on the Outer South Head.HistoryBarthelemy Lauvergne was the senior artist on board the French corvette LA FAVORITE which completed a circumnavigation between 1830 - 1832 on behalf of the "July Monarchy" government. Under the command of Captain Cyril Pierre Laplace, the purpose of the voyage was to secure French commercial interests in Indo-China and the South Pacific. The route the expedition followed took in Pondichery, Madras, Singapore and Manilla, as well as Sydney, Tasmania and New Zealand before crossing the South Pacific to Chile and subsequently home to Toulon (France) around Cape Horn and via Rio de Janeiro.
SignificanceAs the European presence in Asia and the South Pacific expanded countries sought to cement their influence in religious, political and economic spheres. While scientific studies were still embraced by these expeditions, commercial and diplomatic interests were becoming more important.
