DescriptionThis view of Port Jackson, New South Wales was published on 30 November 1809 in England and based on a painting by William Westall.HistoryWilliam Westall sailed with Matthew Flinders in HMS INVESTIGATOR 1801-1803 as official artist. This early view of Sydney Harbour was published in 'The Naval Chronicle' volume 22, plate 297, and depicts naval ships moored in Sydney Cove and a general view of the harbour less than 20 years after the British began colonising the area.SignificanceThis print is an early depiction of the settlement of Port Jackson in the first decades after the First Fleet arrived in 1788.
