DescriptionPhotograph of SS CLAN KENNEDY of the Clan Line. Printed in dark blue ink below photograph 'OCEAN VICEROY' which has been crossed out and CLAN KENNEDY handwritten. OCEAN VICEROY was purchased by Clan Line from the MOWT (Ministry of War Transport) in 1948 and renamed CLAN KENNEDY. The vessel was sold again in 1959 to China and renamed KELLY. HistoryThe Clan Line, established in 1877 in Glasgow, was at one stage one of the largest cargo businesses in the world. Each of their ships were prefaced with 'Clan' with a red house flag bearing a white diamond with a red rampant lion in the centre. Being so extensive, the Clan Line experienced a large number of its ships either requisitioned by the British government, or otherwise used to ship vital supplies to Britain during both World Wars. At one stage was referred to as the 'Scots Navy' and the company lost a 30 ships in WWII. After the war The Clan Line purchased a number of ships from the MOWT and rapidly built new vessels to be able to meet their business demands.SignificanceThe collection of John Watt and his father before him, encompasses decades of passenger, cargo and naval shipping.
