DescriptionThis collection of 59 documents relates to transport services provided to the brewing firm Tooth & Co Ltd by various shipping companies. It consists of 12 cheques issued by and 12 receipts issued to Tooth & Co Ltd by Huddart Parker Limited, AUSN Co. Ltd, North Coast Steam Navigation Company, McIlwraith McEacharn Line Proprietary Limited, Hawkesbury Steamship Company and Macleay River Co-operative S.S. Co. Ltd; 16 lists of items requested from the North Coast Steam Navigation Company, Macleay River Co-operative S.S. Co. Ltd, Timber and Shipping Agents Ellis & Nicklin, and for the SS GOSFORD II; seven invoices issued to Tooth & Co Ltd and two notes accompanying cheques.HistoryTooth & Co Ltd was established in 1835 by John Tooth and his brother-in-law John Newham who opened a brewery in Sydney called the Kent Brewery. Tooth & Co Ltd became the major brewer of beer in New South Wales and was incorporated in New South Wales in 1888. Tooth & Co Ltd expanded by acquiring the Rechs Waverley Brewery in Sydney in 1921 as well a number of other hotels and land, including the New South Wales franchise of Hungry Jacks. In the 1930s, Tooth & Co Ltd embarked on a marketing campaign to give its pubs a modern image. Amongst other steps, this involved decorating pubs with paintings to advertise the beer. The paintings typically showed men at work or playing sport and included references to local industries or sports. Tooth & Co Ltd was listed on the Sydney Stock Exchange in 1961 and acquired by Carlton & United Breweries in 1983.SignificanceThis collection provides an insight into wharfage services which operated at a time when shipping was the major means of freight and transport around Australia.October - December 1966
