DescriptionThis archive series numbered [001] - [008] consists of photographs and negatives collected by Melbourne swimmer William Cavanagh. Four of the images depict a man swimming training in a pool; others depict pool side scenes such as people sitting on a diving board and men shaking hands after a swimming race, and other depict men standing in front of long surfboards and surfing.HistoryWilliam Cavanagh was a Victorian state title holder and member of the Melbourne swimming club who surfed at Lorne and Torquay in the 1930s. William was a founding member of the Torquay Surf Life Saving Club. As a 16 year old boy William Cavanagh was known as the "Peter Pan" of swimming, he competed against Frank Beaurepaire and won the Victorian 220 yards championship in 1925.
