DescriptionThis archive series numbered [001] - [040] consists of material relating to the sailing career of Allan Moran of the Sydney Flying Squadron. It includes a letter, a People Magazine clipping on sailboats, two Icianz Circle newspapers, a program for the 1959 Sydney Flying Squadron race, and 35 newspaper clippings from The SUN, Daily Mirror, Sunday Mail, Sydney Morning Herald, the New Zealand Herald and other publications. Several clippings relate to the controversy about the Ben Lexcen designed skiff TAIPAN.HistoryAllan Moran began sailing on the THELMA with the Birchgrove 14-foot sailing club around 1924. He also sailed on the 14-foot skiff MISSOURI. During the late 1930s and early 1940s Allan made several model skiffs which were raced in Birchgrove and Sydney Harbour. In 1946 Allan became Assistant Secretary of the Sydney Flying Squadron and carried out official duties until he retired in the early 1960s over the controversial decision to allow the revolutionary designed TAIPAN with its smaller crew to race against the more conventional 18-foot skiffs with their larger crew.
