DescriptionThis archive series consists of personal papers relating to Miss Elsie Jackson's return voyage from London to Sydney via America and Canada on EMPRESS OF BRITAIN in 1931. It includes a suggested itinerary for Miss Jackson's voyage on board EMPRESS OF BRITAIN, a memo to Miss Jackson regarding the cost of a passage on a Cunard Line ship, a Canadian Pacific Railway card, a theatre ticket at Alcazar Theatre, San Francisco, and five receipts from the Pullman Company for passage from Chicago-Grand Canyon, Grand Canyon-Los Angeles, Niagara Falls-Chicago and Oakland-Washington.HistoryMrs Elsie Ashdown (nee Jackson) (1888-1975) undertook two cruises from Sydney to London over the course of 25 years. During her first voyage from Sydney to London in 1931, Elsie travelled third class on the Orient liner ORONTES via Cairo and the Suez Canal. After a week-long English tour, Elsie took an overland trip through Europe, followed by a second cruise on ORONTES to Norway and the northern capitals. Elsie returned to Sydney via Canada and the Americas. In 1956, travelling under her married name, Elsie undertook a second voyage on the Orient line to London, South Africa, South America and around the coast of Australia to Fremantle, Adelaide, Melbourne, Tasmania and back to Sydney.
