DescriptionThis archive series consists of ephemera collected by Elsie Ashdown (nee Jackson) between 1927 and 1979. It includes an Orient Line brochure, leaflet and envelope, Huddart Parker Line stationery, 'Bon Voyage' cards, a photographic card from The Port Jackson and Manly Steamship Co Ltd, and other material relating to Albany, Western Australia, Magnetic Island off Townsville, Queensland, Sydney, New South Wales and Victoria.HistoryMrs Elsie Ashdown (nee Jackson) (1888-1975) undertook two cruises from Sydney to London over the course of 25 years. During her first voyage from Sydney to London in 1931, Elsie travelled third class on the Orient liner ORONTES via Cairo and the Suez Canal. After a week-long English tour, Elsie took an overland trip through Europe, followed by a second cruise on ORONTES to Norway and the northern capitals. Elsie returned to Sydney via Canada and the Americas. In 1956, travelling under her married name, Elsie undertook a second voyage on the Orient line to London, South Africa, South America and around the coast of Australia to Fremantle, Adelaide, Melbourne, Tasmania and back to Sydney.
