DescriptionThis archive series numbered [001] - [022] consists of material relating to surf life saving collected by Ballina Surf Life Saving Club lifesaver Jim Flanagan. It includes three cards, a 'History of Surfing' fact sheet, records of Surf Life Saving Association champions, branch minutes, 'The Australian Surfer' newspaper, three 1938 'Australia Celebrates' pamphlets, two Association postcards, and eight programs of surf life saving competitions in Yamba, Evans Head and Ballina, NSW.SignificanceJim Flanagan was a surf lifesaver with the Ballina Surf Life Saving Club on the far north coast of New South Wales from the 1920s onwards. The material in this collection is significant in chronicling some aspects of life of a typical lifesaver in the early days of the surf lifesaving movement in Australia.
