DescriptionThis archive series numbered [001] - [161] consists of material relating to national and international rowing collected by distinguished Australian rower Kevyn Parke Webb. It includes 56 letters, 23 photographs, 19 certificates from the New South Wales Rowing Association, six from the J B Sharp Memorial regatta, one certificate each from the Victorian Rowing Association, St Ignatius College Regatta and Australian LAA Swimming Carnival, three race result lists, three manuscripts, eight articles on professional rowing, four brochures, four sets of cards, seven newspaper clippings, four notes, two forms, two programs, two postcards, an exercise chart, rowing results, fact sheet, press information, media release, memo, menu, club notice, watercolour painting, report, manuscript volume, and a 1989 rowing calendar.HistoryKevyn Parke Webb’s distinguished rowing career began in 1938 when he joined Haberfield Rowing Club in Sydney. In 1939 he won the Walker and Hall cup and went on to represent Australia in the New Zealand Centennial Games of 1939-1940. Webb represented Australia at numerous games, including the 1950 empire games in Auckland, Canterbury Centennial Games 1950 - 1951, Cardiff Empire Games 1957 - 1958, and was team captain for the Australian squad during the Olympic Games at Lake Albano, Rome. Webb appears to have competed until the 1960s, being heavily involved with rowing club committees and associations from the 1940s through to 1987, when he became president of the New South Wales Rowing Association. In 1990, he was awarded the Order of Australia for service to rowing.SignificanceThis material collected by rower and administrator Kevyn Parke Webb reveals aspects of the administrative and financial structure of the sport of rowing in New South Wales and other states of Australia from the 1890s.
