DescriptionThis archive series numbered [001] - [058] consists of material relating to rowing in Switzerland collected by distinguished Australian rower Kevyn Parke Webb. It includes three articles, a brochure advertising Lucerne, 14 letters from rowing clubs, 12 magazine and newspaper clippings, a rowing club newsletter, 25 photographs of regattas at Lucerne, Vevey and Zurich, and two postcards.HistoryKevyn Parke Webb’s distinguished rowing career began in 1938 when he joined Haberfield Rowing Club in Sydney. In 1939 he won the Walker and Hall cup and went on to represent Australia in the New Zealand Centennial Games of 1939-1940. Webb represented Australia at numerous games, including the 1950 empire games in Auckland, Canterbury Centennial Games 1950 - 1951, Cardiff Empire Games 1957 - 1958, and was team captain for the Australian squad during the Olympic Games at Lake Albano, Rome. Webb appears to have competed until the 1960s, being heavily involved with rowing club committees and associations from the 1940s through to 1987, when he became president of the New South Wales Rowing Association. In 1990, he was awarded the Order of Australia for service to rowing.SignificanceThis material collected by rower and administrator Kevyn Parke Webb reveals aspects of the administrative and financial structure of the sport of rowing in New South Wales and other states of Australia from the 1890s.
