BiographyIn 1852 Christopher Brand (1813-1875) applied for his first U.S. Patent and began producing his whale gun and bomb lance which became well known in the worldwide whaling industry. In 1859, Christopher Brand built a large two-story foundry and machine shop, which employed 60 workers. After his death in 1875 the factory continued under his sons management for another twelve years until the discovery of oil in Pennsylvania reduced the demand for whale oil.
