BiographyAugustin or Auguste Jal (1795-1873), the pre-eminent and influential French naval historian presented one of the first scholarly consideration of ships and naval matters. Apparently, he was so influential during the turn-of-the-century Britain that founders of SNR almost called it The Jal Society.
