JM Kronheim & Co

BiographyJoseph Martin Kronheim, 1810-1896, was a German-born wood engraver and lithographer best known for being an early adopter of George Baxter’s breakthrough ‘Baxter process’. This process used zinc instead of wood blocks, which reduced printing time. Kronheim & Co. was able to print hundreds of prints and book illustrations, more than 5,000 total by the 1860s. Though it was a complex process, it was the first truly commercial way to produce colour.
