James lived in Townsville, North Queensland, for 10 years during which time he travelled extensively throughout Northern Australia collecting subject matter.
He arrived in Sydney 1972 and continued to paint country subjects including Sofala and Hill End.He travelled through the Murray River country collecting information on
paddlesteamers and rivercraft.These paintings are traditional
(in character and record a past era). More recently, the artist's paintings are reflections of Pittwater and the Hawkesbury River.

His works are in the possession of collectors world-wide.
