Jeff Carter travelled to Ulladulla, New South Wales in 1959-1960 and photographed members of the Sicilian fishing community in action. Some of his subjects were postwar migrants; others were born and raised in Australia. He wrote two articles for 'People' magazine accompanied with this photographs and highlighted the prejudice Italians often endured. In many ways, his photographs provided an intimate glimpse into their hard work ethic and strong sense of community and tradition.SignificanceJeff Carter photographed Australians at rest and play, capturing the diversity of those who were drawn to the beach. His photographs are a valuable document of Australian beach culture in the 1960s.
