DescriptionThe French vessel AMIRAL CHARNER is shown at Wharf 1, East Circular Quay on 24 November 1934. The ship was photographed by Frederick Wilkinson during a ferry trip to Cremorne, Sydney. The warship AMIRAL CHARNER was present in Australian waters as part of the Victorian centenary celebrations. The Sydney Tram Depot features behind the ship.HistoryThe French sloop AMIRAL CHARNER was named after French Vice Admiral Leonard Victor Joseph Charner. It was a Bougainville class colonial sloop which fought at the Battle of Koh Chang in the 1941 French-Thai War. It was launched in 1932 and scuttled at My-Tho in 1945.SignificanceThis photograph is representative of the French vessel AMIRAL CHARNER in Sydney Harbour in 1934.

The print is part of the F G Wilkinson Photograph Collection, comprising more than 700 glass plate negatives of ships in Sydney Harbour between 1919 and 1936. The collection provides an extensive and well-documented coverage of the changing styles of shipping in the port of Sydney before the decline of the coastal trade. The backgrounds also reveal the changing face of the city and harbour foreshores.
