The image was probably taken on the sloop's arrival at wharf 3, Circular Quay on 23 November 1934, after the Victorian centenary celebrations in Melbourne.HistoryFR AMIRAL CHARNER was a Bougainville class sloop of the Marine Nationale (French Navy) and was launched on 1 October 1932. Designed for operation in the French colonies in Asia and Africa, the sloop visited Australia for the Victorian centenary celebrations in 1934. On its maiden voyage, on 23 November 1934, the sloop arrived in Sydney from Melbourne under the command of Captain P C Adelus. The vessel berthed alongside wharf 3 in Circular Quay. On 17 January 1941, AMIRAL CHARNER served in the Battle of Koh Chang during the Franco-Thai War. On 10 March 1945, the sloop was scuttled.SignificanceThe Samuel J Hood photographic collection records an extensive range of maritime activity on Sydney Harbour, including sail and steam ships, warships, crew portraits, crews at work, ship interiors, stevedores loading and unloading cargo, port scenes, pleasure boats and harbourside social activities from the 1890s through to the 1950s. They are also highly competent artistic studies and views - Hood was regarded as an important figure in early Australian photojournalism. Hood’s maritime photographs are one of the most significant collections of such work in Australia.
